We use the name "Los Angeles" as shorthand for Southern California, like most people use "New York" or "Chicago" to describe more than the city itself. Actually, Los Angeles itself makes up less than half of Southern California's population. So this page will help you understand the needs in the greater Los Angeles area. To learn more about the specific area that we are targeting first, visit the archives page. You'll find articles, maps, pictures, and more...

Southern California is a vast mission field. Its size is similar to that of Massachusetts. L.A. County itself has a population greater than that of 42 states. Only eleven nations in the world have economies larger than that of L.A. County. Southern California has nearly twenty million residents. And you can find nearly any mission field here – from Arab-Americans and Mexicans to Germans and Chinese. For example, look at these numbers from Los Angeles county alone:

MISSION FIELDS IN LA COUNTY

Asian Indian 60,000
Vietnamese 78,000
Guatemalan 100,000
Japanese 111,000
Korean 186,000
El Salvadoran 187,000
Philippine 260,000
Chinese 294,000
Mexican 3,000,000

Southern California also has an impact around the world. Mexico lies right next door, and more than 3 million Mexicans live in Los Angeles. Because of its location on the Pacific Rim, the city has close connections with the major Asian nations. The Port of Long Beach services the entire western half of the United States. Of course, Hollywood influences the world with television programming and movies. California’s largest city truly is a gateway to the world.

Southern California is also a stronghold for sin. This can be seen in the huge homeless population, the sexual perversion, the gangs, the violence, the rape, the abuse, and a thousand other evidences of ruined lives. The people are torn apart by sin. Why Southern California? The people. That is the real answer. Behind the "dirty" reputation of the city are millions of people who do not know and love Jesus Christ. They are hopeless and condemned.
